Over the years we have compiled a list of the most commonly asked questions we receive from bride and grooms when organising their wedding. Please find a list of these below, and feel free to ask us anything else you may think of over and above!




Can we change the menus?

The wedding menus are set menus however there is a degree of flexibility amongst the options

All dietary requirements can be catered for

Bespoke menus can be created at an additional cost

Menus can be upgraded to include a choice for a supplementary charge of;

  • £3 per person per starter
  • £5 per person per main
  • £2 per person dessert

What are the centre pieces included in the Penguin Rock package?

The centre pieces are silver candelabras. We provide white candles however you are welcome to provide an alternative colour to suit your colour scheme or decorate with flowers if you like.


Can we upgrade the wine in the drinks package?

The wine included in our standard drinks packages is the house wine and this can certainly be upgraded for an additional charge. Our full wine list appears in our Wedding Packages literature and your coordinator will be happy to discuss this in more detail with you.


Can we order additional drinks for our guests?

Yes you can add extra drinks onto any of the packages at an additional cost.


Zoo entry is included – can our guests come to the Zoo before the wedding?

Entry is included for all day guests attending your wedding, so they are welcome to arrive in the morning and make the most of the fantastic surroundings prior to the wedding. They can also venture out into the park through the course of the day, for example when you are having photos taken. Entry is not included for additional evening guests.


Do you have selected suppliers?

Yes we do have selected nominated suppliers who we have used for a long time and who we trust implicitly to provide the best experience possible for you on the day. If however you would like to choose your own suppliers for some or all extras for the wedding, this is no problem at all.


Will there be a discount if we take out entertainment or other parts of the package?

There will not be any discount if you take out particular elements of our wedding packages.


The Venue:

Can we get ready for the wedding at Mansion House before the wedding?

Yes you would be more than welcome to get ready in the House from 9am on the day. You are also welcome to invite hairdressers/beauticians/photographers into the House at this stage to help you and your bridesmaids with the preparations!


Can we have a drinks reception in the gardens of Mansion House?

Of course, we are happy to serve your drinks reception outside weather dependent.


Who will be looking after our wedding on the day?

Our dedicated operations team will be look after everything for you on the day, led by our Events or Assistant Events Manager.


Will there be any other events on in the House on the day of the wedding?

If you have chosen a package which includes exclusive use of the venue, there will be no other events on that day within the House.


What time do we need to leave?

All guests must exit the park by 00:45


What kind of ceremonies are you licensed to hold?

We are licensed to hold civil, humanist and Religious ceremonies.


Do we organise the registrar or does the venue do this for us?

You will be responsible for booking the relevant official who will conduct your ceremony. If you decide to opt for a civil ceremony, we will provide you with an AP1 form which you will need to send directly to the Registrar’s Office with the relevant fees. Please note maximum seated numbers for a religious, civil or humanist ceremony wedding are 90


Can we have music whilst walking down the aisle?

Yes of course, we do have a CD player or speakers for use with an ipod that can be used


Can we have a piper during the day?

Yes of course, the piper can pipe outside in the grounds until 6pm and thereafter must be indoors. They are welcome to pipe you into or out of the ceremony if you like


Can we have a band and/or DJ?

Yes of course you are welcome to have either or both


Is there an alternative for larger evening receptions?

We do have an alternative venue for evening receptions of over 150 guests although this is unavailable during school holidays


Should we take out wedding insurance?

We would recommend wedding insurance. This can be arranged with your bank


Is there any way to incorporate the animals into our day?

Many of our wedding couples choose to go the Penguin Parade at 2.15pm with their guests, usually after their ceremony. It is also possible to arrange panda viewing time slots (subject to availability) for guests, at an additional cost which goes directly back to the Zoo and their conservation efforts


Access arrangements:

How do our guests get into the Zoo for the wedding?

All guests should arrive via the Members Gate which is situated at the top left hand side of the car park and is just a short walk to the house. The team there will be aware of your wedding, therefore guests should just let them know that they are attending to gain entry

Should you have any disabled guests with a blue badge we can arrange for vehicle access to enable them to drive directly up to the Mansion House.


What are the parking arrangements for our guests?

Parking is included free of charge (subject to availability), guests should just let the car park attendant know that they are attending your wedding.


How many bridal cars can we have?

We can arrange for a maximum of 3 bridal cars to be driven up to the Mansion House on the day of your wedding. To do so we must request authorisation prior to the day, and therefore require the time of your arrival and the registration number of the car(s)


When can our suppliers gain access to the venue?

There are a number of access restrictions in place within the park, please ask any suppliers to contact us directly to arrange access on 0131 314 0336.




Can we have confetti & rose petals?

Yes of course however any confetti must be biodegradable


Can we get photos taken with any animals?

We can arrange for you to have photos at the start of the penguin parade and at the panda enclosure. Please be aware however that we cannot arrange for these to be private

You are welcome to take photos anywhere else in the park although safety is paramount therefore we cannot allow any photos to be taken WITHIN any animal enclosures.


Can we have chair covers & ties?

White chair covers are included in every package for the ceremony. If you wish to have these for the wedding breakfast also or to add on chair ties, there would be an additional charge of £3 per chair cover and £1.20 per tie. We are happy to arrange the ties in specific colours to suit your colour scheme.

How many can you seat for the wedding breakfast?

We can seat a maximum of 90 for the meal in Mansion House.


How many tables would I have?

This will depend on your numbers. The maximum number of tables would be 10 and our co-ordinator will be happy to discuss layouts with you. Sample table plans can also be found within the Wedding Handbook.


Is there a children’s package?

Children are charged at £35 each, and we do have children’s drinks packages available also. Children are welcome to have a smaller portion of your chosen meal, or alternatively we have a children’s menu which you can choose from.




Can we set up a bar tab?

Yes you can set up a bar tab. A credit card authorisation form must be completed before hand to guarantee the payment.


What time does the bar close?

We will call last orders at 00:15 and give everyone 15 minutes drinking up time until the bar closes at 00:30.


What if we like a particular drink that you don’t have?

Please feel free to let us know and we will endeavor to get this in for your day from our suppliers.


Do you have draft beer?

At present we don’t have draft however we do have a full range of bottled beer and cans available. We are currently looking into the prospect of draft on the bar therefore this is subject to change.




Can you recommend any local hotels for our guests?

There is a list of local hotels which we recommend within the Wedding Handbook.


Confirmation and payment process:


What do we need to do to book our wedding with you?

Once you have decided to choose the Mansion House, we will put together a contract for you and send this for your perusal. Once you are happy with everything, you should return this to;

How much is the initial deposit?

The deposit to secure your date is £500


When is final payment due?

  • 50% of the estimated remainder balance is due no later than 6 months prior to the date
  • Full outstanding amount is due no later than 4 weeks prior to the wedding

How can we pay?

You can pay by card, or bank transfer


Open Evenings Do you host any open days or evenings that we can attend after booking?

Yes we host around 3 or 4 per year and we would be delighted if you would like to attend any of these. Dates will be posted on our website or you can contact your coordinator for these at any time. You are welcome to bring along some guests and our team and suppliers will be in attendance to give you the chance to meet the people who will be behind your big day!
